Before the advent of the Portuguese in the 16th century, Galle was known as Gimhathiththa, and it was the island's primary harbor.


Galle is a large city in Sri Lanka, located 119 kilometers southwest of Colombo. Galle is the provincial headquarters and major city in Sri Lanka's Southern Province, as well as the administrative center of the Galle District. The City of Galle and its Fortifications is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.


Although there are several ways to get to Galle, the best ways to get to Galle by rail and bus. The journey takes about 4 hours and 35 minutes.


Galle is a sizable city by Sri Lankan standards, with a population of 101,749 people, the most of whom are Sinhalese, and a considerable community of Sri Lankan Moor (Muslims), especially in the fort region. Galle is also known for its international population, which includes both inhabitants and owners of vacation houses.


The climate in Galle is tropical rainforest. The city has no true dry season, though January and February are noticeably drier.


The Dutch fortified the city significantly in the 17th century, beginning in 1649.Galle is the outstanding example of a Portuguese-built fortified city in South and Southeast Asia, demonstrating the confluence of Portuguese architectural styles with native customs.

The Galle fort, initially erected by the Portuguese to protect Galle in the 16th century, was an earthen construction with pallisades covering the northern inland side with a rampart and three bastions. They assumed that the seaward side was invincible and hence did not build any fortifications on it.


Because of the Portuguese seizure of the Maldives beach, the moors had to establish a new route between the Maldives and Zeilao (Ceylon), as the Portuguese suspected moors of roaming around in that region. Lorenzo's ships were drifted to the Cape Galle after becoming entangled in the suddenly developed currents. As a result, the Portuguese were drawn to Galle Fort.

Galle's beaches are nothing short of stunning. Galle city offers a lovely assortment of beautiful beaches in and surrounding it. The glistening blue seas, enticing waves, and breathtaking surroundings are enough to enchant anyone.


Galle is worth a visit for a first-time visitor. The Galle Fort is interesting because of the galleries/museums and the small coffee shops inside. and I'm confident you'll appreciate it.
